Long before Europeans discovered North America, it was inhabited by Indian
and Inuit groups. This video tells how one group selects a new chief. The
story is set against the background of the carefully preserved customs and
rituals of the Tsimshian, a Pacific coastal people. These people provide
one of the more accurate pictures of early Indian ways.

By 1740 there are more than 1.5 million people in Britian's North American
colonies, but there still are less than 50,000 inhabitants in New France.
Small communities have sprung up along the St. Lawrence River basin and
in isolated areas inland. In the spring of that year Nicolas de lugny, a
young ensign, arrives from France to take up duties with the military. Compared
with the long-established way of life of his homeland, the relative primitivism
of New France holds little appeal for him. But within a year he develops
a deep respect for the harsh land and the people who are struggling to tame
it.

values most and becomes a great success as a businessman and landowner.

direction her life took upon her arrival in south-western Ontario.

his own land thwarted by the Great Depression when he must leave his wife

hard times and personal tragedy, Lypa endures and eventually returns to
live out his life on his own land.

Guido Vitelli comes to Canada in the early 1950's from the village of Opi
in the Abruzzi region of Central Italy. As soon as he gets work he sends
for his wife, Antonia, and two sons, Franco and Phillipo. As the years pass,
Guido and Antonia have two more children and build their fruit and grocery
business in Toronto's west end into a modest success. When he gets older,
a series of events lead Guido to question whether coming to Canada was the
right thing for him to do. He returns to Italy and reaches some final decision
in the village of his birth.
